If you like Vikings you should also watch the Spartacus series that was made relatively recently. Great stuff. roman orgies and some pretty cool fight scenes, and, surprisingly, a pretty good storyline too.

They made quite a mention of the Saxon's steel though i remember as being much stronger than theirs, so maybe the latticing of their own steel came as a result of that?

All that rowing must have made Vikings strong f*ckers. Also they were first I believe to use the technique to forge swords using strips of steel laticed together. This made them very strong.

I think he's probably an amalgam of different heroes that you get when an oral tradition is finally written down, like Hercules, Theseus or Beowulf, or Robin Hood

I've never before publicly appealed to Wikipedia for support. But I'll swallow my pride.
Ragnar Lodbrok or Lothbrok (Old Norse: Ragnarr Loðbrók, "Ragnar Hairy Breeches") was a legendary Norse ruler and hero from the Viking Age described in Old Norse poetry and several sagas. In this tradition, Ragnar was the scourge of France and England and the father of many renowned sons, including Ivar the Boneless, Björn Ironside, Halfdan Ragnarsson, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, and Ubba.

No it doesn't as beleive it or not I looked it up but Brok in Danish means Hernia. And the way he throws himself around its probably apt.
